Bio:
I have always been drawn to children’s books. As a young child I would sit for hours staring into the pictures of countless children’s books and savoring the stories. It was a way of escaping into another world and I was really able to connect with the other worldy beauty of the incredibly realistic renderings of fairy tales or with the minimal and raw simplicity of cartoon type illustrations. It was an obsession. I stayed up late at night just staring at these amazing books for hours on end and this obsession followed me into my late teens. It was embarrassing for me in my preteen and teen years being in the children’s book section of the library. People would stare at me as I shuffled through all the books looking for ones I hadn’t read or trying to find ones I loved as a kid. It even went as far as me taking my newborn sister with me as a guise of looking for books for her. All throughout my high school years I thought that I wanted to pursue writing so that I could write children’s books and through this I eventually descended into the area of illustration. I had decided to pursue Illustration in university as a way to completely embrace all aspects of the medium so that I would be able to construct children’s books myself from word to image. I have always found nostalgia in children’s books. There is an unmistakable quality of magic in them as well as beauty. I admire both the beauty and whimsy of the writing and the illustration and strive to contribute something that might possibly one day move a similar audience. I see this medium not only in an artistic perspective but also see it as a medium in which we can use to develop the different aspects of education and learning. Children books are the stepping stone to literacy and are one of they key formats of media in which we can use to educate children in terms of aesthetic taste, personal opinion and individuality, as well as cognitive learning and behavior. The many roles it can play in influencing cultural and societal foundations are fundamental and important! I find that this medium is highly underrated and is not appreciated in its ability to significantly impact children. It is my upmost desire to be able to contribute something to this incredible resource and find the process in doing so not only leads to immense satisfaction in terms of contribution to society and learning but also a great personal satisfaction and happiness.
